The Lung Development, Injury and Repair Gordon Research conference

Dear Associate Editors, Members of the Editorial Board, contributors, colleagues and friends.
I am glad to tell you that Dr. Thomas J. Mariani, distinguished member of the American Journal of Physiology-Lung Cell and Molecular Physiology editorial board will be chairing the Lung Development, Injury and Repair Gordon Research conference next year (see below). This is an outstanding conference and I would urge everybody, especially our younger colleagues, to attend.  You will hear some great science and network with outstanding scientists.  The list of speakers and topics will be published soon.
I did a quick search on PubMed using the terms Am J Physiol Lung Cell Mol Physiol. AND (Lung Development) AND (2012 OR 2013 OR 2014).  I was gratified to find  153 outstanding articles including the seminal review by our esteemed associate editor, Dr. Rory Morty (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24213917)
Please consider submitting manuscripts on lung development to AJP-Lung.  They will be assigned to Dr. Rory Morty and the reviews will be quick, fair and helpful.  Remember, we are the top rated basic science pulmonary journal based on the h-index (http://www.scimagojr.com/journalrank.php?category=2740).
With best regards and many thanks

AJP-Lung 2013 Statistics

I hope you are all well and having a great summer.  I have some very good news: we are ranked number 1 according to H-index (among journals publishing mainly basic science articles. According to Google: “ The h-index is an index that attempts to measure both the productivity and impact of the published work of a scientist or scholar (or journal).”  Our impact factor rose from 3.523 to 4.041.  I think these are remarkable achievement and will of course be disseminated to the entire pulmonary community.  The table listing the IF of all APS Journals can be found in http://www.the-aps.org/mm/Publications/Journals/Impact-Factors.html
The big challenge right now is to keep our momentum for next year.  Honestly this is daunting task.  Please, consider submitting some of the outstanding articles from your laboratory to AJP-Lung.  Thanks to the diligence and excellence of our Associate Editors and our Editorial Board, they will be reviewed fairly and rapidly (please see our statistics below).  Furthermore, as many contributors can testify the reviews are always helpful and improve the impact of their articles.  The expectation for my first term as editor (which expires on January 1st, 2015) is that each member of the editorial board accepted at least 50% of the requests to review manuscripts and published at least one original article.

Rejection rates for research manuscripts were as follows:
 201=37.45%; 2012= 48%.
Times for first decision as well as final decision for revised manuscripts are shown below.  I am very glad to tell you that the average time to make a decision in a revised manuscript dropped from 13.32 days in in 2012 to 10.3 days in 2013.
Time from EIC/AE notification to decision 2012, 2013:
Query 2012
Time from EIC notification to decision sent to author
First Decision average  22.91
Time from AE Acceptance (Revision) to decision sent to author

Query 2013

Time from EIC notification to decision sent to author
First Decision average  21.97

Time from AE Acceptance (Revision) to decision sent to author
Time to Revision Decision  10.30

We need ideas for reviews and calls for papers.  Some to the call for papers have been extremely successful.  We need to keep trying and rotate them to keep readers interested.  Most important we need you to contribute manuscripts and reviews to your journal.  It is my hope that our impact factor and h-index will continue to increase.  Of course this reflects the excellence of the published articles.
I look forward to being busier and busier and complaining that I have too many papers to assign.  Please make this happen

With best regards
Sadis

Great time in Giessen, Germany

I had a truly wonderful time last week participating as an invited speaker tot the 12th Annual Retreat of the International Graduate Program in Molecular Biology and Medicine of the Lung.  This program is sponsored by the Universities of Giessen and Marburg, http://www.uni-giessen.de/cms/fbz/fb11/forschung/graduierte/mbml/faculty and is directed by Dr. Rory Morty, our very capable Associate Editor.  The scientific program and social activities were absolutely fantastic.  The invited speakers included two Nobel laureates (Professors Robert Huber and Harald Zur Hausen), Sir Magdi Yacoub, His Eminence Cardinal Willem Jacobus Eijk, Archbishop of Utrecht, The Netherlands and many others.  The student presentations were splendid.  Dr. Morty invites two graduate students every year to participate in the retreat.  According to inside information, publishing in AJP-Lung, and other journals of course, is looked upon favorably!!  If you are a graduate student in biomedical science, next time you are in a scientific meeting, look up Dr. Morty (Associate Editor for AJP-Lung), introduce yourself and let him know what you are doing.

Foward and Upwards!

FORWARD AND UPWARDS: AJP-Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology Impact Factor increases from 3.523 to 4.041

Shortly after I was appointed Editor of AJP-Lung, I wrote an editorial titled: "The American Journal of Physiology Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology: "The best place to publish basic, translational, and hypothesis-driven clinical lung research". http://ajplung.physiology.org/content/302/1 January 1, 2012: L1-L3; DOI: 10.1152/ajplung.00356.2011

The Associate Editors and I have worked very hard to achieve this goal. We have instituted a number of changes which are detailed in this AJP-Lung Powerpoint.

Our 2 major challenges we instituted were to:
1. Increase our impact factor and
2. Increase submissions of high quality manuscripts.

I am truly delighted to tell you that our impact factor increased from 3.523 in 2012 to 4.041 in 2013. Our 5-year impact factor is 4.338. At the same time submissions of research manuscripts are 5% higher than last year. Most importantly we are proud of the number of emails from contributors thanking the Associate Editors for the in depth, timely and helpful reviews of their manuscripts.

Please remember that this is your journal and the Associate Editors and I will spare no effort to continue to improve it. We welcome your comments and suggestions for review topics, calls for papers, changes in our editorial process etc. AJP Lung is dedicated to publishing and disseminating high-quality original and review articles on all aspects of lung research. We welcome articles that highlight new mechanisms of pulmonary diseases and that offer insights into new treatments.

PLEASE CONSIDER SUBMITTING YOUR NEXT ARTICLE TO AJP-LUNG CELLULAR AND MOLECULAR PHYSIOLOGY http://ajplung.physiology.org/

Sincerely,

Sadis Matalon

Submissions are up!

Great news! Submission of research manuscripts to AJP-Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology from 1/1/-6/31-2014 were 5% higher compared to last year.  This is a great accomplishment and reflects the dedication and hard work of the Deputy and Associate Editors, the members of the Editorial Board and invited reviewers.  We have received many positive comments concerning the review process.  Authors feel that their papers benefit greatly from the thoughtful reviews.  Our Associate Editor clearly summarize what needs to be done for the paper to move forward.  We believe we have a positive impact in advancing lung research.
Please consider submitting your paper to AJP-Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology.  We welcome basic, translational and hypothesis driven clinical papers on all aspects of lung research.  Please notice that we have six calls for papers (please see http://ajplung.physiology.org/).  Papers fitting these categories receive expedited reviews.

Also please notice the first Rapid Report published in AJP-Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology

If you would like to submit a rapid report please follow these guidelines for Rapid Reports:

An image is worth a thousand words.

Friends and Colleagues,

It is time to find a new figure for our website (http://ajplung.physiology.org).  In the past, I selected a figure from recently published articles (either in Press or in Final Form). However, this is your journal and I am asking for your help in identifying the best possible figure to represent us.  We are looking for a color picture from AJP-Lung articles published in the past 6 months that epitomizes the essence of the journal.  Please send your nominations to Sadis Matalon, Editor, AJP-Lung (sadis@uab.edu)  and copy Amy McEver, our Editorial Assistant (amcever@emory.edu).  Self-nominations are welcome. The figure will be selected by the Editor and Deputy Editor.  The winner will receive a thank you letter from the Editor and her/his contribution will be acknowledged in our Facebook page.

I look forward to your input.  Thank you very much for your contributions to our journal.

Sadis Matalon,
Editor in Chief,
American Journal of Physiology-Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology
